Introduction
Building something new comes with ups and downs, uncertainty, and moments when you don't know exactly what to do next. And that's completely normal. Sometimes, the most valuable lessons come from figuring things out along the way.
💡 12 Practical Lessons for Entrepreneurs
1. Don't stop your own idea.
Don't leave your idea in your head. Ask yourself: Does anyone actually need this? Have honest conversations with people beyond your circle of friends.
2. Turn your idea into a specification.
Define what your product should do, what it should look like, and what it should avoid. The clearer your idea, the easier it becomes to develop.
3. Allow yourself to fail.
Mistakes are part of the process. As Anni reminded us, money can be fixed, but a lost year can't.
4. Build a prototype before it's perfect.
Let people see, test, and react to your idea. Ask questions, learn from feedback, and discover who your product is really for. Small experiments are opportunities to learn.
5. Find out what it really costs.
Understand the costs of developing and selling your product, and be realistic about your financial situation before committing.
6. Keep going. Two nos are not a final no.
If an application gets rejected, ask what was missing and try again. Your first business plan doesn't have to be your final version.
7. Do the maths before you fall in love with your idea.
Make sure your business model adds up. Think about whether your product can cover its costs and become financially sustainable.
8. Protect your name before you use it.
Check whether your brand name is available and consider registering it before investing in packaging or other materials.
9. Keep your own schedule.
Take responsibility for your next steps, track progress, and follow up. Don't assume everything will move forward without you.
10. Marketing brings leads. Sales close deals.
You need both. Start building visibility and relationships with potential customers before launch day.
11. Calculate the margin, not just the price.
Account for production, packaging, shipping, fees, and other costs. Revenue isn't profit, and your margins need to leave room for the unexpected.
12. Build your network before you need it.
Help before you ask, make meaningful connections, and seek out people who disagree with you. Different perspectives can challenge your assumptions and help you improve your ideas.
Wrap Up
You don't need to have everything figured out before you start. Be patient with yourself, take your time, and accept that the process will involve uncertainty. You can learn, adjust, and try again as you go.
Anni reminded us that we don't have to wait until we have a polished success story to share what we're learning. Sometimes, the most useful insights come from being honest about the journey while we're still on it.
